Our Vision
The Peace Center at Birmingham is an exciting,
cooperative effort of the nonsectarian Chester County Peace Movement and the
Birmingham Friends Quaker Meeting. Located on the historic grounds of the
Birmingham Meeting in Chester County, this gathering place for peace education
and activism has the promotion of non-violent alternatives to all forms of
conflict as its vision and purpose. The Peace Center's facilities consist of
the Octagonal Schoolhouse and the Peace Garden -- they are appropriate for
visitors of all ages. Admission is free.
The Octagonal Schoolhouse
(built in 1819) will become a gathering place and education center with
exhibits informing visitors of the causes, consequences, and the prevention of
violence. This will be done with a short video presentation as well as a
variety of printed materials. The Peace Center's message will be portable so
that it can be taken to schools, civic and church groups. This facility will
also be used as a meeting place, performance space and for workshops.
Admission is by appointment.

The Peace Garden
surrounding the Common Grave of British and American soldiers who fell at the
Battle of the Brandywine, is a quiet place for contemplation of the
consequences of war and to honor those that lost their lives. Wandering
through the native plantings will take you by a series of granite Peace Stones
each inscribed with a thought provoking quotation in keeping with our theme of
peace education.
Peace Stones*
are available by private subscription and help to spread the word of Peace in a very unique and permanent manner. The Peace Garden is open year round.
